Former Vice President Mike Pence spoke in Des Moines on Saturday, where he addressed the potential indictment of former President Donald Trump.

Pence stated that “no one is above the law,” but also expressed his concern that the potential indictment against Trump is politically motivated and troubling.

During a foreign policy event with Sen. Joni Ernst, sponsored by the Bastion Institute, Pence responded to questions from reporters about Trump’s possible indictment by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. When asked if Trump should be prosecuted if he broke the law,

Pence said that the investigation and potential indictment were politically motivated, which is deeply concerning to him and to many Americans.

Pence acknowledged that no one is above the law, but he expressed confidence that Trump can take care of himself. Pence's focus is on the issues that affect the American people today.

Trump responded to the news of the potential indictment on Truth Social, a conservative social media site, by stating that he expects to be arrested and indicted on Tuesday and called for supporters to protest.

In response to Trump’s call for protests, Pence emphasized that Americans have the right to peacefully protest but denounced any violent action. Senator Ernst also emphasized the need for peaceful protests.

Pence's visit to Iowa is his second trip this year ahead of the 2024 Iowa Republican caucuses. When asked about a possible announcement for a presidential bid, Pence stated that he and his wife,

Karen, expect to have a decision by springtime. This article was originally published in the Iowa Capital Dispatch, a sister site of the Nebraska Examiner in the States Newsroom Network.
